As a childcare provider and educator, it is important to have cultural competency.  This basically means that you have a clear understanding that every student comes from a different background culturally, financially, religiously, and socially.  That being said it is imperative to remain open-minded and adhere to those differences to provide security and confidence in the classroom.  If a child comes from an Islamic background there may be specific activities, they may have to refrain from participating in.  As an educator, we much keep in mind ways to never make these children feel excluded or less than because of their cultural differences

Understanding the culture of children in early childhood settings is beneficial to their learning because it helps educators create a more inclusive and welcoming environment, as well as tailor their teaching methods to better meet the needs and interests of their students.

For example, if an educator is aware that a child in their classroom comes from a culture that values collectivism and interdependence, they may create group projects or activities that foster collaboration and teamwork. On the other hand, if an educator is aware that a child comes from a culture that values individual achievement and competition, they may create opportunities for students to work independently and set personal goals.

To understand the cultures of children in an early childhood setting, an educator can start by asking open-ended questions and listening to the children and their families. They can also seek out resources and professional development opportunities that focus on cultural competency and inclusivity. Additionally, an educator can observe the children at play and in their daily routines to get a sense of their cultural traditions, values, and beliefs. It is also important for educators to be mindful of their own cultural biases and make an effort to be culturally responsive in their teaching practices.
