Unit 3 Discussion MM150 Survey of Mathematics
10,000 Steps
One of the more popular fitness goals is to walk 10,000 steps per day. That can sound pretty daunting! But how long does it actually take?
Post 1: Initial Response
Using a basic timer (the one built into your smartphone will work well for this), time yourself walking 75 steps at your average pace.
In your post, complete these steps and answer the question:
- Set up a proportion.
- Calculate how long it would take you to walk 10,000 steps at that same pace.
- Thinking about a typical day in your life, how could you add in that much time for walking? You wouldn’t have to do it all at once. For example, you might split it into a morning walk, a lunch break stroll, and an after supper walk with the family.

Post 2: Reply to a Classmate
Your classmate feels like getting 10,000 steps may be too big of a goal for them to set right now. When it comes to fitness, even a little bit is better than nothing at all. Use proportions to determine how long it would take for them to reach 5,000 steps and 7,500 steps. Give them some words of encouragement as they start building a new walking habit.
