Developing countries like India experience the worst type of healthcare disparities worldwide. Malnutrition and access to wholesome food are just two problems the people of India face. Unfortunately, the fact is that many of India’s citizens live below the poverty line, leaving them hungry and in need of care, preventative and acute. In contrast, the developed country of Sweden has longer life expectancy and a sound universal health care system. Access to care is not an issue there. Sweden’s leads the way in global health promotion and equity by setting goals or objectives beneficial to their inhabitants. (Holtz, 2022) Long wait times are a trivial concern. Whereas the United States has a complex and bureaucratic healthcare system that is not afforded to all. Nationally, the disparity seen most is access to pricey private health insurance or disparities among racial or ethnic groups. The US may be a leading economy but is lacking in the healthcare sector. In comparison, to most third world countries, the US is the Mecca for healthcare, with the abundance of hospitals and innovative technology.
The United States has room to improve in terms of public health. Preventable and chronic disease that are the leading cause of death and disability in the US are not focused on enough. (Holtz, 2022, pg. 34) Americans are obese and riddled with heart disease and cancer. As the nursing profession becomes more complex and nurse leaders take legislative seats, it is imperative nurses define their role in positively impacting healthcare. While nurses work locally, they impact the global effort when providing care and educating patients. The plan for a better, healthier tomorrow starts with expanding nurses’ roles.
