NUR109 M5.9: Self Reflection Activity-Intro to Community, Population, Public, and Global Health (Adults, Children, Family)

Question 1: Family Caring for the family as opposed to individual clients presents a lot of challenges. Which aspect of caring for families do you think is the most difficult and why?NUR109 M5.9: Self Reflection

Answer 1: In my opinion, one of the most challenging aspects of family-centred care is addressing conflicting needs and preferences within the family unit. Each family member may have different health conditions, treatment requirements, and emotional needs, making it a complex juggling act for healthcare providers. Balancing individual care with the collective well-being of the family can be a delicate task. Moreover, effective communication and engagement with family members, while respecting their autonomy, can be challenging, as building consensus on care decisions can be demanding. In family-centred care, understanding and addressing the dynamics and interpersonal relationships among family members are essential for providing holistic and effective healthcare services.

Question 2: Adults End-of-life nursing care presents many challenges for both the patient and the nurse. What do you think is the most difficult aspect of caring for a patient at the end of life and why?NUR109 M5.9: Self Reflection

Answer 2: End-of-life nursing care is undeniably one of the most emotionally taxing and challenging aspects of nursing. The most difficult part, in my view, is ensuring that the patient experiences a dignified and comfortable end of life. This involves not only managing the physical symptoms and pain but also addressing the patient’s psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs. It requires a deep understanding of the patient’s values, beliefs, and preferences, and effective communication to ensure their end-of-life care aligns with their wishes. It can be emotionally draining for the nurse as they witness suffering, grief, and family dynamics at their most intense. However, it’s an essential and profoundly rewarding part of nursing, as it allows us to provide comfort and support to patients and their families during their most vulnerable moments.
