ENG121 Week 5 – Discussion 1 Communication/Speaking Out Answer
The article I chose is Mother tongue. The article speaks about an Asian-American mother and daughter and the challenges of speaking the English American language. Tan loves to write and thinks the English language influences everything. She speaks about the struggles she and her mother endured growing up as a child speaking “broken english”. As a child, because no one could really understand her mother she would have to make calls and pretend to be her to get information or yell at someone for being rude to her. At a point in time in Tans’ childhood, she felt ashamed of her mother for speaking poor English. Most of Tan’s friends were able to understand what her mother was saying while others didn’t understand her at all. Tan said, ” I think my mother’s English almost had an effect on my limiting possibilities” ( Tan, 1990 p.7 ).
