HN330 Unit 3 Discussion
Many people who seek case management services are survivors of serious trauma. Some have survived emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, and others have been mistreated or abused by insensitive caregivers or previous interactions with misguided healthcare professionals. Many have been subjected to stigma, shame, or harmful stereotypes. In addition, people who are members of minority cultures or minority groups are often subjected to prejudice and discrimination just for being a member of a certain race, ethnicity, or other group.
As a result, the people who need services are often mistrustful of human service workers and protective of themselves and their families. Case managers have an ethical responsibility to create warm, welcoming, and culturally sensitive environments for clients. It is your job to help reduce the effects of previous trauma and to begin to rebuild the trust that is essential for client recovery and goal achievement.
With this in mind, and considering the information covered in Chapter 3 and 5 and the web resources for this unit, please respond to the following topics:
- Choose two of the roles detailed in the readings and summarize the responsibilities and tasks associated with that role.
- What does the term “healthy boundary” mean to you? Why is it so important for case managers to create and maintain healthy and safe boundaries for clients?
- Provide an example of a case management boundary that exists primarily to protect the client. Be specific and describe the boundary as well as how it protects the client from physical or emotional harm. Review the Ethical Standards for Human Services Professionals as you are preparing your response to this question.
- Why might African Americans be less likely to seek case management services than other cultural groups? Be sure to use the web resources in the reading section to support your response.

HN330 Unit 3 Discussion Answer
Choose two of the roles detailed in the readings and summarize the responsibilities and tasks associated with that role. Tracking/Follow up Role and Advocating are the two roles I chose. Tracking and following up is the most neglected role in case management. Through Follow up the case workers overtime can determine if their solutions have helped their clients. This focuses on the review, evaluation, monitoring, and reassessment of a client’s health condition needs, ability for self -care, knowledge of condition and treatment regiment, and outcomes of the implemented treatments and interventions.
