MM212 Can You Hear Me Now? Unit 6 Discussion
Can You Hear Me Now?
The average number of daily phone calls, C, between two cities varies jointly as the product of their populations, P1 and P2, and inversely as the square of the distance, d, between them.
- Calculate the distance in miles between your current city and the capital city of your state. (If you live in the capital of your state, choose a different city in your state to complete the problem.) Use any mapping application (e.g., Google Maps™) to determine this distance.
- Use a search engine to determine the approximate populations of the two cities.
- Determine the average number of phone calls between the two cities using the formula above. Show all steps in the calculation and round to the nearest phone call.

- Find the average number of calls between the city in which you are currently living and the city in which your classmate resides. Use any mapping application to find the distance between your cities. Show all steps in the calculation.
- Is this more or less than the number of phone calls your classmate calculated? Was the difference in phone calls due to the inverse relationship with distance or the direct relationship with population or both? Explain.
