Order of Operations – “Socks Then Shoes” OR “Shoes Then Socks”?

Post 1: Initial Thread

  • Using words, describe the order of operations and explain how it is used to simplify expressions. Explain specifically the order in which mathematical operations must be performed to correctly simplify an expression.
  • Provide an example of a real-life situation in your current or future profession where a specific order of steps is necessary for a proper end result.
  • Create an original mathematical expression which must be simplified using order of operations.
    • Choose five numbers (keep them small), and list them in a row.
    • Square one of the numbers (use ^ to indicate exponent).
    • Insert a real number operation symbol in between each number (+, −, *, /), using all four operations.
    • Insert a set of parentheses around two of the numbers and their operation
  • Solve it correctly using your knowledge of the order of operations, explaining each step of the process.

Note: You can verify the accuracy by copying the expression and pasting it into Google™’s search bar. (Google has a built-in calculator.)

Choose a classmate’s initial thread that you find interesting.

  • Consider your classmate’s numeric expression. You will ignore the order of operations, performing the operations simply going from left to right (as one reads the English language). Show every step of the process.
  • Is the result the same? Note: sometimes it will be, sometimes it will not. Explain why it might be important for everyone to simplify the expression in the same way.
  • Consider your classmate’s real-life situation. What might happen if they did not follow their order of operations? (Humor and creativity are encouraged, if used appropriately.)

Choose another classmate’s initial thread that you find interesting.

  • Review their numeric expression. Take away the parentheses, and now simplify the expression correctly using the order of operations. Show every step of the process.
  • Is the result the same as the simplified expression with parentheses? Explain. Note: sometimes it will be correct, sometimes it will not.
