MM212 The Evil Genius Unit 3 Discussion
The Evil Genius
An evil genius was present at your birth. Unbeknownst to you or your mom, you were injected with 100 cubic centimeters (cc) of a docile radioactive material as an experiment the moment you were born. You have recently discovered the unauthorized addition and want to know how much of the substance is still left in your body and when will it disappear. You craftily figured out the formula for deterioration of the substance and are ready for some answers.
The formula to determine the amount of the substance left in your body:
where:
A = Remaining amount of the foreign substance
Ao = Starting amount of foreign substance
y = age in years
Post 1: Initial Thread
- Calculate your age to the nearest ten-thousandths (4 decimal places). To find the exact number of days since your last birthday, you can type into Google, “days since your last birthday?” Then divide it by the days in the current year (365 or 366 for leap year.)
- Using the above formula, with Ao = 100 cc, find the amount of the material remaining in your body today rounded to the nearest thousandth (3 decimal places). Show all steps in your calculation.
Post 2: Reply to a Classmate
Choose one classmate’s post and reply to their post. You want to convince your classmate that they can speed up the deterioration of the material in their body for a small cost with the injection of the antibody. How long will it take for the antibody to reduce the amount of material to the negligible amount of 0.01 cc?
- The correct amount of antibody must be the same amount of radioactive substance remaining in their body. Take the remaining radioactive material from your classmate’s post as your starting amount, Ao, of foreign substance.
- Using the formula above, calculate how many years it will take for the radioactive amount to be reduced to the negligible amount of 0.01 cc. Remember you are now solving for y, the number of years from the time the antibody was taken. Show all steps in your calculations.
- Oh, and the cost? It costs $10,000 per cc. Given how much you need to pay, is it worth taking the antibody?

MM212 The Evil Genius Unit 3 Discussion Answer
Here are my numbers. I am 39 years old. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it! My birthday is January 5. Since my last birthday there have been 273 days. (By the way, did you know that you can just TYPE that into Google, “Days since August 5, 2020” and it will give you the answer?!)………..
