CE220 Unit 2 Discussion Children’s Safety

Children’s Safety

Safety for young children in early learning environments is one of the most crucial responsibilities of early childhood professionals. Whether the environment is a preschool, a center, or home care facility, professionals are responsible for ensuring safety both inside and outside the setting.

Please respond to the following:

  • Describe what you would do to regularly identify and avoid potential safety hazards in the early learning environment.
  • Share two food and two toy recalls that you find to be concerning and/or surprising.
  • Discuss at least two ways to share resources with parents to make sure they keep their children safe.

Points and Rubric

This discussion is worth 30 points, and the rubric that will be used to grade your discussion participation is available from the Grading Rubrics page under Course Resources. The deadline for posts is Tuesday night at 11:59 p.m. ET; however, you must participate throughout the week to earn full credit.

This discussion addresses the following unit learning outcome:

  • Describe how to avoid and address potential safety hazards.

It also addresses the following Course Outcome:

CE220-1: Define elements for creating safe and healthy learning environments for young children.

Remember that your goal for discussion is three-fold:

  1. To participate actively throughout the entire week.
  2. To contribute in a way that adds to the discussion and moves it forward in an original fashion.
  3. To use the course content to inform your posts and responses.

Keep in mind that when you post, you should always reference items you cite — be sure to use APA format for this. Also, be sure to refer back to the rubric as often as you need to during the week. The class is all about sharing knowledge, so use Discussions as a way of creating a community resource for yourself and your colleagues.

CE220 Unit 2 Discussion Children’s Safety Answer

Describe what you would do to regularly identify and avoid potential safety hazards in the early learning environment.

One of the simplest ways to identify potential safety hazards is to inspect indoor and outdoor play areas daily (Marotz, 2020).  Upon entering the building each day, I would thoroughly inspect the indoor classroom for any potential dangers.  I would make sure all the outlets had plug covers and replace any that might have been removed overnight by the cleaning staff.  I would make sure toys were put away, lights and smoke detectors were functioning correctly, and check for broken toys or furniture.  After inspecting the indoor areas, I would inspect the outside play areas.  I would make sure there was no standing water because that could attract insects or bacteria.  Children are curious and they might try to drink water found outside.
