Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapter 1 Correctional Aims and Correctional Systems from the textbook. Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from any required material or other scholarly resources and properly cite any references.

In this discussion,

  • Examine the pros and cons from four of six major correctional aims or goals of sentencing from your Stojkovic and Lovell (2019) textbook.
  • Compare and contrast at least one function of a historical correctional system with at least one function of a contemporary correctional system.
  • Describe correctional system functions that relate to (select at least one)
    • punishment,
    • rehabilitation, treatment, or
    • supervision

The six major correctional aims or goals are retribution, deterrence, incapacitation, rehabilitation, reintegration, and restoration (Stojkovic & Lovell, 2019, sec. 2.1). The pros of retribution holding one responsible for their actions. The con for retribution, not every criminal that is punished learns not to re-offend. The pro for deterrence is to show society what activity is not lawfully acceptable and there will be consequences if you break the law as this person has. The con for deterrence people often takes their chances if they are going to get caught. The pro for rehabilitation is helping individuals who have not learned or acquired skill sets to learn these vital skills sets to not re-offend in life. The con to rehabilitation is not every correctional facility has a program like this or there is very little of the program. The pro of reintegration the offender is using community-based organizations to help out in the community and feel needed. The con of reintegration some communities lack community-based organizations and correctional facilities do not make you aware of them. …….
