QUESTION.

The coursebook tells us that the motive or force impacting the onset of female criminal/juvenile offending is often one clouded with trauma and exploitation. This is made especially clear in the the current sections (V-IX). However, what seems to be debatable is how well law enforcement and/or the criminal justice system makes their presence known in these matters.

Therefore, please discuss the role/impact of both law enforcement and the criminal justice system in understanding the perception, treatment, and use of power in crimes involving women and young girls. First, begin with a brief discussion of the major research on gender and the nature of female offending, making certain to highlight the “costs” and “conditions” normally associated with female offending. Then,  discuss how women/girls with with trauma are treated within the system once they begin a life of crime. Lastly, drawing from all of the studies in this section, pinpoint some of the laws or current policies in place that aid in perpetuating this cycle of female offending. How are the current systems lacking and where could/should they do more to assist women/girls who find themselves trapped in a cycle of violence (i.e., policy implications and treatment initiatives).

Make certain your personal voice can also be found throughout this essay. This means that while you do gather most of the evidence from the articles in the section, there should be areas throughout displaying your personal take on the situation or your summary of the evidence.

GRADING – You will be scored on the following three major items:

1. Following guidelines from assignment and syllabus

2. Response to ALL parts of the question

3. Analysis of supporting evidence (use of articles from book chapters)
