Cognitive development is a foundational part of human development. As a human service professional it is important to understand the various perspectives that are considered when understanding cognitive development in early childhood. Understanding how cognitive development may occur impacts what intervention and supports need to be made available to assist children in having a healthy and positive developmental life stage.

  • Define the Piaget and Vygotsky theories of cognitive development and discuss three factors that can affect the cognitive abilities of children.
  • Discuss the role of self-awareness in helping children to grow in their cognitive development abilities.

Piaget’s theory is described as the art of influencing cognitive development through play. His belief is that the “preoperational stage” of cognitive development occurs through ages 2 to 7 and he breaks this process down into two different sub-stages: symbolic function and intuitive thought. During the symbolic stage children are able to ultimately use their imagination to create symbols of things that are not presented to them, an example would be drawing a picture and the child describing it as a picture of their family, however, what is displayed is scribbling and lines.
