HN144 Unit 6 Discussion The Impact of Social Issues on the Development of Adolescence
There are many physical changes that take place during adolescence such as growth spurts, pubic hair, and increased hormones. All of these changes within the body affect an individual’s sense of self because they feel and see themselves differently. Growth spurts are common for girls around age 10, and boys around age 12 (Williams, 2017). Because girls typically begin puberty and body growth well before boys, this can cause social changes and drifts. Girls also begin to grow longer and thicker armpit hair, leg hair, arm hair, and pubic hair. It is very common and usually expected for women to shave all of these areas of the body, which can cause stress and self-doubt. Along with increased hormones and mood changes, girls get their first menstrual cycle, called menarche. Even though there is not a set moment that defines the beginning of a boy’s puberty development, “nocturnal emissions and facial hair can indicate puberty in boys” (Williams, 2017)………….
