Read the case studies found in the Criminal Justice Case Studies: Criminal Law and Jurisdiction document and choose one.
  • Identify the criminal justice agencies that may want to claim jurisdiction in the case study you chose.
  • Explain briefly why each agency would want to claim jurisdiction and what the benefit would be to each agency.
  • Explain briefly why an agency may NOT want to assume jurisdiction.
  • To what degree should ethical considerations, such as what is best for the victim, the community, or even the offender, factor into jurisdictional decisions?
  • Select one of the case studies discussed in Part 1. Then, choose one of the agencies and imagine that you are going to argue to your superior that your agency deserves jurisdiction.

The case of late-night robbery explains how Edwin tried to break into a house of an 84-old-male homeowner after a party night in a club. For many reasons, different agencies would get involved to solve the problem. It is impossible to answer some questions without thoroughly understanding the situation. While it is hard to make specific promises about different activities or things, the role of the investigation can explain what needs to be worked out in certain areas and provide a report of possible reasons why people commit a reported crime (Jubaer et al., 2022). Identifying the crime is one of the biggest pluses people can have, but different agencies will need to get involved in offering their insight. For many people, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) can play a massive part among other agencies in revealing the motive behind Edwin intruding on the house of this older man. The agencies can explain more than what the people know.
