A cashier employed for 18 years ate a bag of potato chips without buying them while at work. She paid for the bag as soon as her shift ended. She was fired. The employee ate the chips because she was diabetic and was concerned that her blood sugar was getting too low. Later, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) sued the employer on her behalf and claimed the employer discriminated against her because of her disability.

The cashier’s human rights were violated, due to her disability (diabetes), which led to her employer eventually firing her. The sole reason she was eating the chips was to stabilize her blood sugar, during a hypoglycemic attack. The act of firing an employee, due to a medical condition is considered discrimination, which is not only unethical but illegal. According to the EEOC, “The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was amended by the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (“Amendments Act” or “ADAAA”), is a federal law that prohibits discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities” ( EEOC, 2013)……….
