In our dynamic world of healthcare, it is a rarity to find a fellow healthcare professional who has not encountered the request to work mandatory overtime at some point. This experience prompts one to ponder whether it’s a manifestation of state laws designed to safeguard healthcare workers or a reflection of the existence of acute nurse shortages within their respective healthcare institutions. In my own journey, I’ve encountered the call for mandatory overtime on several occasions. While I’ve contested it on a few instances, and with valid justifications, I’ve also willingly embraced the extra hours due to personal considerations. Notably, I’ve never faced punitive consequences for declining mandatory overtime. The underlying truth is that we are fortunate to have an empathetic charge nurse who ensures the equitable distribution of such overtime demands. Moreover, our nursing team collectively acknowledges the constraints posed by limited staffing in our organization. As a result, we willingly commit ourselves to extended hours of service in pursuit of enhanced quality care and the assurance of patient safety.
