The healthcare landscape in the United States has undergone significant transformations in recent years, driven in large part by the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Placing the patient at the forefront of healthcare, the integration of interprofessional teams has become a prevalent practice in healthcare settings nationwide.
These teams are designed to coordinate care effectively and enhance patient education, with a focus on improving overall patient health and fostering self-care (American Nurses Association, 2015). In my work setting, palliative care teams, comprised of physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and social workers, stand out as prominent examples of interprofessional collaboration aimed at providing specialized care for individuals with life-limiting illnesses such as cancer, trauma, and advanced heart disease (Moss, Seifert, & O’Sullivan, 2016).
Among the key components fostering the success of interprofessional teams are compassion, advocacy, resilience, and evidence-based practice, collectively known as iCare components. These elements play a crucial role in supporting the collaborative efforts of healthcare professionals and contribute to positive patient outcomes. Moss et al. (2015) define compassion as a sympathetic awareness of another person’s distress coupled with the desire to address and alleviate it.
Within the context of interprofessional teams, nursing actions play a pivotal role in promoting compassion. Nurses, as integral team members, actively contribute to fostering a compassionate care environment by demonstrating empathy, understanding, and a commitment to addressing patients’ physical and emotional needs.
