One nursing theory that has proven valuable in my practice, particularly in nurse education, is Virginia Henderson’s Need Theory. This theory underscores the crucial importance of promoting patient independence to prevent hindrances in their post-hospitalization recovery.
Henderson’s focus on fundamental human needs serves as the cornerstone of nursing practice, further evolving the theory to address patient needs and the nursing role in facilitating their fulfillment (Ahtisham & Jacoline, 2015). The Need Theory posits that nurses care for patients until they achieve self-sufficiency, demonstrating unwavering commitment and readiness to serve on a 24/7 basis.
It also advocates for nurses to receive education encompassing both scientific and artistic aspects at the college level. The Need Theory delineates four care categories, comprising a total of 15 components, encompassing (i) physiological needs related to eating, sleep, dress, and environment; (ii) psychological needs, which emphasize learning, communication, expression of emotion, fears, and other emotional needs; (iii) sociological needs, including family, work, and recreation; and (iv) spiritual needs, encompassing the patient’s spiritual beliefs and practices (Ahtisham & Jacoline, 2015).
