NR505 Week 7: Evidence-Based Answer

Evidence-Based Practice Change Project Proposal Template

Nursing Practice Concern/Problem In the realm of Family Nurse Practice (FNP), a critical concern identified for this project proposal centers on the reduction of maternal mortality, particularly among women in minority groups. As an FNP nurse, my responsibility encompasses overseeing patient health and wellness across all population groups, with a specific focus on women.

Given the pivotal nature of pregnancies, it is imperative to ensure quality and safe patient care throughout the entire maternal journey—from pre-conception, pregnancy, to post-natal. Addressing the health and safety of both new mothers and newborns is paramount to prevent pregnancy-related complications, including death. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2019), approximately 700 women succumb to pregnancy-related complications annually, translating to a rate of 17.2 deaths per 100,000 live births.NR505 Week 7: Evidence-Based

Edmonson et al. (2017) assert that around 60 percent of maternal deaths can be averted with proper availability and access to quality healthcare services. Unfortunately, maternal deaths disproportionately affect women from minority and low-socioeconomic groups, including Native Americans, African-Americans, and Alaska Natives. MacDorman et al. (2016) highlight that women from minority groups face a threefold higher risk of maternal mortality compared to white women, attributed to poor socioeconomic status, inadequate healthcare facilities for quality care during childbirth, and the inability to afford quality healthcare services due to a lack of health insurance.NR505 Week 7: Evidence-Based

To bridge this health disparity gap and enhance health outcomes for minority women, it is crucial to focus on reducing maternal mortality rates among this population. Zaharatos et al. (2018) argue that a significant proportion of maternal mortalities occur post-delivery, underscoring the importance of sufficient post-natal follow-ups. In the U.S., standard post-natal care typically occurs only once, six weeks post-delivery. However, this single post-natal visit covered by Medicare presents challenges, particularly for women from low socioeconomic backgrounds, hindering their ability to seek quality medical care after childbirth. This situation results in untreated pregnancy-related complications that can be life-threatening if not addressed promptly.

The proposed project aims to address these challenges and implement evidence-based practices to reduce maternal mortality rates among minority women, ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare throughout the maternal care continuum.
