NURS 6053N Week 1 Answer
Analysis of a Pertinent Healthcare Issue
Violence in healthcare stands as a formidable national concern, impacting not only healthcare providers but also patients and the industry at large. Daily, healthcare professionals contend with various forms of violence, encompassing verbal abuse and physical assaults, jeopardizing their safety and detrimentally influencing the quadruple aim (Phillips, 2016). This paper aims to scrutinize the issue of violence in healthcare, assess its impact on our healthcare organization, summarize pertinent articles on the subject, and outline strategies to address this pervasive problem.NURS 6053N Week 1
Violence in healthcare is a global phenomenon, with healthcare workers facing an increased risk of encountering violence. According to the World Health Organization [WHO] (n.d), between 8-38% of health workers experience physical violence during their careers. Additionally, verbal aggression from both patients and visitors contributes to the prevalence of violence in healthcare settings. Statistics from 2013 to 2018 reveal that a staggering 76% of registered nurses (RNs) report exposure to workplace violence (Hamblin et al., 2017). Of these, 54.2% and 29.9% report experiencing verbal and physical abuse, respectively, from patients.
Approximately 33% and 3.5% of nurses report verbal and physical abuse, respectively, from visitors. Notably, violence acts such as grabbing, swearing, and shouting/yelling are prevalent, highlighting the urgent need for intervention (Groenewold et al., 2018). Despite its prevalence, violence in healthcare is significantly underreported, with only 20-60% of incidents documented (Hester, Harrelson, & Mongo, 2016). This underreporting underscores the need for a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted aspects of violence in the healthcare workplace. Addressing this complex issue requires a holistic approach that not only acknowledges its widespread occurrence but also implements effective strategies to mitigate and prevent violence in healthcare settings.
