The focus in this course thus far has been on typical development in infants/toddlers, children, and adolescents. However, many children and adolescents can face challenges in their development. The focus of this Discussion is on atypical development in children, with a focus on some of the childhood and adolescent disorders described in the DSM-5.

According to Croft (2017), ” typical development is regarded as what peers of the same age are accomplishing during an expected time period” (pg. 18). Atypical development can be defined as a child’s development deviating from the norms of children for a particular age and stage. This can include delayed development, as well as accelerated development. The theory that can relate to atypical development would be Piaget’s Cognitive Developmental theory. This theory applies to atypical behavior and development because it describes the various stages children go through and the way they acquire knowledge: sensorimotor stage, preoperational stage, concrete operational stage, and formal operational stage……
