Title: Food Safety and Reflections on the Course
Have you ever felt sick to your stomach? Perhaps you thought you had a ‘stomach bug’? Well, it just might have been a foodborne illness. According to the CDC (2016), 48 million people get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 people die each year from foodborne illness. Perhaps, you have been one of these people!
Take a moment to reflect on your progress in Principles of Nutrition over the term. When you started the course, you may have known some basic nutrition principles but now you should have a more comprehensive knowledge base.
Discuss the following in your initial post:
- Have you ever experienced a foodborne illness? Why did you suspect it was foodborne illness?
- What are steps that you can take to reduce your risk of acquiring a foodborne illness in your home?
- What advice would you give your family and friends on how to reduce the risk of acquiring a foodborne illness while eating out at a restaurant?
- Have you made any changes to your personal food choices as a result of what you learned in this course? Do you plan on making any changes to your food choices in the future?

Foodborne illnesses are caused by consuming contaminated food and drinks. This is a result of microbes and pathogens in food or drinks. These microbes and pathogens can be parasites, bacteria, or viruses. Toxins and chemicals may also lead to food poisoning. CDC notes that there are more than 250 diseases caused by foodborne diseases. The key symptoms of foodborne diseases include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. CDC warns these symptoms can be life-threatening, and it is crucial to seek medical help (CDC, 2016)………..
