Topic Proposal for your Formal Academic Essay
Unit 5 begins your process for writing your first formal academic essay. In this Discussion Board, you will generate possible topic ideas and research questions you might answer in your academic essay. Although the final draft of this paper is not due until the end of Unit 8, you will work through the writing process step by step, using the Discussion Board to help you ensure your topic choice is effective, that your research question is appropriate, and your plan for writing is strong.
INITIAL POST
After reviewing the Unit 8 Assignment instructions, brainstorm, talk to others and do a quick Google search to locate two to three recent and relevant changes in your field of study.
Then, use the following downloadable Brainstorming Chart to help you to generate and choose a topic from the list you created during brainstorming that you could focus on for your Academic Essay Assignment. Then, in two or more paragraphs, identify two to three possible topics, a possible Research Question for each topic that focuses either on the cause or effect of this change and examine why you would like to write about this topic. The feedback you receive from your classmates and instructor will help you to choose your topic wisely, establish a clear focus, and begin the writing process.
Include a hyperlink to any source you use in your discussion.
Remember that your goal is to post by Saturday so that you can then focus on other tasks. Make sure your initial post is 200 or more words long and that it includes an open-ended question relevant to your topic ideas, to help your classmates and instructor help you to select a topic and establish a clear focus. Please also refer to and credit the Unit reading concepts to help validate your ideas and give you practice with using and crediting source information.

RESPONSES TO INITIAL POSTS
Respond to at least two of your classmates’ initial posts, offering your classmates constructive suggestions for selecting a topic and identifying a strong, relevant research question to focus the paper on. Be sure to advance the discussion by asking relevant questions that motivate your classmates to reflect on your suggestions and continue the conversation. Each response should be at least 100 words long. Be sure to refer to and credit Unit 5 reading materials and concepts in your posts, to help validate your suggestions.
FOLLOW UP
Respond to the questions your classmates and instructor ask about your topic ideas, to help you to strengthen your topic idea and select the best topic possible. Each follow-up should be around 50 words long.
