Coach Ventura Group 5 Module 5: Discussion – Coach Ventura Group 5 Answer
I personally do not think that the State Board of Nursing should post restrictions on working hours because this takes away from the nurse’s autonomy to choose which working schedule will best fit their current circumstances and needs. For example, I am a mother of three school-aged children and it is much easier to work 3 twelve-hour shifts on the weekend so that I can be with my children during the week for virtual learning. However, several studies have been conducted linking nurse fatigue with medical errors. Medical Researchers determined that the incident of error increased 3.4% in nurses that slept less than 6 hours the previous night. This number appears to be somewhat insignificant. However, in a hospital employing roughly 1,000 nurses, which would be 34 medical error incidents per day. Furthermore, fatigue and sleep deprivation may jeopardize the health of the nurse. According to the National Safety Administration Expert Panel on Driver Fatigue and Sleepiness, sleep loss is the leading cause of sleep-related vehicle accidents. Ultimately, it would be in the State Board of Nursing’s best interest to impose restrictions on working hours.(Rogers, 2020)………..
