SAMPLE SOLUTION

What biological, psychological, or social factors could be used to explain the case study offender’s criminal background? What theories might account for the offender’s behavior?

The case of Jimmy M and his criminal background can be explained through the social learning theory and the situation/environmental influences on behavior. According to social learning theory, the behavior is motivated by the effect it produces, and this is based on mimicry of behavior that one is most exposed (DeLisi et al., 2019). This means that individuals are more likely to behave like those with whom they associate. Jimmy lives in a poverty-stricken and high-crime area of town. This exposed Johnny to high crime, which according to social learning theory motivated his criminal behavior.
