CX3003 Prison in Crisis Answer
Part 1:
Imagine that the warden has asked you to devise a plan to address the emerging issues and challenges described in the case study found in the document, Criminal Justice Case Studies: The Case of the Prison in Crisis.
The primary goals of the correction system are deterrence, incapacitation, retribution, rehabilitation, and reentry. These goals are to the benefit of society. Thus, prisons play a crucial role in maintaining social balance in relation to law and order. With the increasing cases of arrests, prisons have turned into a harsh environment, full of stress and tedium. Overcrowding is a serious issue in the U.S. correction system, appoint the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that chronic overcrowding in California’s prison amount to cruel and unusual punishment (Krisberg, et al., 2014). The case of the prison in crisis brings out the challenge of a medium-security prison that is overcrowded to a serious proportion. The prison now holds serious criminals who will be integrated with petty offenders. This resulted in overcrowding, violence, mental health issues, and increased chances of recidivism among the petty offenders after integrating with serious criminals. The justice system should strive to balance punishing criminal offenders, and upholding the rights of the prisoners (Hanser, 2019).
