Cofer’s story “The Woman Who Slept with One Eye Open” is the tale of a woman who managed to evade the murderous trends of her husband to lead a happy life. The theme resonating best with the story is an expression of the struggles of women before they taste success. Therefore, it is story of courage and resilience for success; which is not always achieved by those pursuing it. Cofer’s poem “Latin Women Pray” has a very close bearing to the nonfiction story. In the poem, she expresses the struggles of Latin women in their quest to succeed in America. The America they so much believe in looks down upon them and treat them badly……..
