In Audre Lorde’s “Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power” and Jeanette Winterson’s “The Semiotics of Sex,” they both speak of a creative energy in women’s lives that is experienced bodily even though they have different arguments about (and different terms for) that energy. What is one key difference that you see in how they speak of that energy and its value for women’s lives?

Audre Lorde uses the term “erotic” to describe and talk about women’s energy and Jeanette Winterson uses “art” in her writing. When I read both essays the first time, I felt like Winterson was more defensive from the beginning, she was defensive about her sexuality and did not want to be defined by who she is, but by what she writes. Lorde is more subdued, I had to look deeper into her reading, she defined women’s energy as an inner feeling, a power………….
