Assignment

Choose a significant late 20th-century or 21-century woman writer not on our reading list for this assignment. (See below for some suggestions.)
Locate, read and/or watch two interviews of this writer, at least one of which focuses on the craft or profession of writing across her career (not merely on her writing of one specific text). She must be speaking about her process of writing or her reasons for writing or her goals in writing in general: in other words, describing her vocation as a writer. Ideally, she will address gender.
Choose one or two short literary works by this writer (short stories or poems, for example). Do not choose a novel unless you have read it or are prepared to read it now.
Script and record an 18-20 minutes podcast (audio only) that addresses the following questions and that follows the instructions below. Include 3-4 minutes of music chosen from your Music Liner Notes assignment within the 20 total minutes of your podcast, as opening and concluding segments only or also as bridges between spoken segments of the podcast. (Music can be from multiple songs or compositions on your list, not just one.)
What specific description of the vocation of writing (her craft, her process, her goals) stands out to you as unusual or different from the other writers you’ve read this term, and why? What makes this description valuable? What insight does it offer you into the writing process or the profession of writing?
How has gender or intersectional identities determined by race, class, and/or sexuality affected this writer’s work and career?
What connections do you see between all of these ideas and the one or two literary texts that you have chosen? How do the literary texts add to the ideas from the interviews or shape them slightly differently?

As you script, make sure to include specific quotations from all three or four texts (two interviews and one or two short literary works) as evidence because many of these questions are analytical. Signal that you are quoting with a phrase before the quotation (e.g. “Line four of the poem reads,”) or with the word “quote” at the beginning and “end quote” at the end. Make sure you say the title of all texts used. Like a written analytical essay, though, most of your script should be your analysis of and reflection on the evidence. You do not need to identify or explain the musical selections in the podcast because you will do that in the Music Liner Notes assignment. Because this is a verbal assignment, you can and should be more conversational in presentation (but still polished!).

For recording, choose technology with which you are comfortable and to which you have easy access. You might simply record on your phone and upload, or you might use VoiceThread or record within Brightspace. Make sure that you understand the technology before recording, however, so that you do not lose your work! You are not graded on the sophistication of your recording skills but rather on the verbal content, so you do not need seamless transitions from the music to your oral presentation. You are not expected to have special equipment or to sound like a professional podcaster!

The following are some possible choices, but you should research writers on your own as well and choose one that interests you. Remember, you must choose short literary texts, not novels, so you must know what genres the writer works in; you must also know that interviews are available. You must locate your own texts, whether online or from an ebook or public library. If you choose a woman writer not on this list, then please email for instructor approval prior to beginning:

ENG 2230 Podcast Answer

Margaret Atwood: Podcast

Margaret Eleanor Atwood is one of the most renowned poets and experts of literary arts in the recent past. She is an 81-year old Canadian who has authored famous poems like Morning in the Burned House, The Circle Game, and The Door. She is also prominent for her advocacy roles, and has used her short fiction, poetry, and novel works to express her ideologies and the positions she supports. Atwood’s most famous work is the dystopian novel titled The Handmaid’s Tale that she published in 1985. She has been a hit with her work, and she resonates well with political and environmental activism.

I feel and believe that Atwood is unique author, one who saw the future before most of his peers. The reference of this discussion is on her novel, The Handmaid’s Tale¸ one of the bestsellers ever-written.
