Through planning and decision making, the management the organizational goals and how to achieve them. Through organizing, the management determine how to group activities and resources. Through leading and controlling, the management help define the path and the roles of stakeholders in achieving the set goals. This was a key lesson, which helped me to understand how managers help the organization to grow through decision making and taking action in daily activities. |
Types of skills needed for Managers:
– Technical, – Interpersonal, – Conceptual, – Diagnostic, – Communication, – Decision-making, – Time management skills.

Page 8 chapter 1 | True, these are some of the most important skills required in management. This lesson helped me to understand that management is more than knowledge and theory learned in school. It is more about the skills and personal development. Communication and interpersonal skills are key skills I felt was crucial to learn and develop to be the best manager. This is to help them interact with people. This is key in motivating, and communicating the organization goals and how to achieve these goals.

Interesting facts on the Evolution of Management regarding:
1) Classical Perspective – the classical perspective opened the enquiry of management from the scientific point of view. It was a key point in defining payment and compensation of the employees, depending on the work done. This was a key point in defining the role of employees within an organization, and if they were tools or resources.
2) Behavioral Perspective – viewed organizations as machines and employees as cogs. In this perspective, the role of the manager in controlling the employees was key. In this perspective the role of the manager was stronger in the growth of the organization, through managing individual attitude, behavior and group process.
3) Quantitative Perspective- Emerged during the World War II. This model was critical in the future application of computer and mathematical models.
4) Contemporary Perspectives – Ø Systems-views the organization as a system with four basic elements, inputs, transformation processes, outputs, and feedback. As a system, an organization can be open system, closed system or subsystem. Ø Contingency-each organization is unique.

This is key especially in learning the position of the employee within the organization. This is from viewing the employee as a tool to cog within a machine, to a resource. This helps define the role of management in an organization. |
